Carricktown, Old Woman Hut + The Nevis
The perfect family getaway. Summer holidays and a quiet wedding photo season meant getting out on the track actually happened. Between Christmas and New year, my son and my Dad packed up the Subie for a boys trip up to the Old Woman Hut. Located up along from Duffers Saddle we took the obvious track, Carricktown.
A fun, winding track with plenty of ruts and some steep sections, with insane views every time you look in the rear view mirror. With the full loaded wagon, this was one of the deciding trips to invest in a set of King Springs. With over 200,000kms on the factory springs, the rear in particular sat right down when heading up hill.
Arriving at the Old Woman Hut just before dinner, we scored it to ourselves, rare at this time of the year. Took it all in and watched the sunset over the Nevis Valley. The following day we tracked back down to the saddle and pointed south into the Nevis, making our way through to Garston. Water crossing galore (a few deep ones too!) and a few tricky sections, but for the most part the track is a well maintained gravel road. You truly get the feeling of isolation through there, and an amazing spot to visit.
