Bendigo Range — in search of snow
Summer 2021. Warm days, sunshine, water skiing and swimming. Until January 20th. Temperatures plummeted and the southerly front rolled in dosing the mountains with a fresh hit of snow.
Got the message from my buddy Sean that we’re going to go an find some, packed some lunch and the snow chains and headed out. Sean doesn’t drive a regular 4x4, but a 1983 Mercedes G-Wagon, affectionally known as the Green Machine. He’s also an incredible photographer creating some great content here.
From where we were, the Bendigo Range looked promising and sits at +1500m. We made our way through the mellow, winding Thompsons Gorge, then stepping it up to the steep Mt Moka track lifting a few wheels along the way. As we got up on the top plateau it was obvious the snow hadn’t reached the are, instead we could look across to the Pisa Range and Carrick Ranges and see where we should have gone instead.
We were rewarded with mud though. And lots of it, making for some great photo opportunities along with the southerly gale, which would curving the mud spray over our vehicles like an Indonesian barrel.
Here’s the photo set from the day, taken by both Sean and myself.
